As a third-generation fishing captain, his roots run deep in the maritime heritage of his family. Prior to his illustrious career as a captain, Joel spent two decades as a child psychologist, specializing in childhood grief issues and counseling, and even co-created two published children's books. Joel's dedication extends beyond fishing, as he has been actively involved in various charitable activities and community initiatives, including fundraising for local youth charities, serving as an Inshore Fishing Instructor for IMG Academy, and volunteering for organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America.
